     Banco Filipino Savings and Mortgage Bank started operating on July 9, 1964 at a time when the banking industry was perceived to cater primarily to the rich. It opened with an initial capital of 3 million pesos at Plaza Sta. Cruz - one busiest sections of Manila, and near the regularly - visited church.One of the objectives of Banco Filipino's founding President Tomas Banzon Aguirre, was to shed the exclusive image of the banking industry. He believed that because of it, much of the common man's savings remained untapped. Hence, Banco Filipino was organized with the thrust of providing service to the public, the Filipino masses especially. The name "Banco Filipino" itself was chosen not only because it is easy to remember, but also because it connotes ownership of the bank by the public.As its symbol, the Bank chose the sun with 12 rays representing the 12 hours of service offered by Banco Filipino to its clients daily 12 months a year.
